Key points on Remembrance of things past by Marcel Proust


1. Remembrance of things past by Marcel Proust is a french novelist and literary critic who lived from July 10, 1871 till Nov 18, 1922.
 
2. The essay opens up with the Celtic idea that souls of the dead are trapped in objects, plants and animals. They are released outside when humans come in contact with the right objects. 

3. Our memory of the past resides deep behind our conscious thoughts. It only comes outside during accidental events not by deliberate efforts. 

4. Sensations play a key role in awakening these memories. When people make a suitable contact with these materials objects, sensations arises. 

5. The narrator, tries to remember his own memory in a place called Combray but fails in it. 

6. One evening, he returns home and is offered Madeleine cakes and a cup of tea by his mother. After consuming it, he feels a new sensation that is intense and ecstatic. 

7. He feels so much pleasure but cannot find its origin. He feels high, timeless and completely transformed.

8. To recognise it, he eats the snacks again but the sensation grows weaker and starts diminishing.

9. He makes much effort on his side and later realises that conscious efforts should not be made here. He avoids distractions around him and tries to recapture the taste itself. 

10. This makes him recognize that memory lies in darkness within us deeply and there requires the right amount of patience and work to revive them.

11. After some time, he feels a memory surging outside within himself. This is the memory of his stay in Combray with his aunt. He remembers how he spent time with her and ate Madeleine cakes dipped in tea prepared by her. 

12. Now he feels that the key is 'Taste and Smell '. These sensations preserve memories. They arise when they come in contact with material objects related to our past.

13. Memory is compared to Japanese paper flowers. When they are placed in water, they unfold and form a shape. Same is for the memories of the past says Marcel Proust.

14. The past in us is never lost and they are deep within us. Time and sensation can trigger them to rise. Therefore, sensation is the key to remembrance.

"Knowledge is love and light and vision. Wisdom is knowing what to do next".
