Key points of Consumption and Taste by Ben taylor in the book Food and Cultural studies.

1) The entire text revolves around the concept of food consumption and taste. It shows how our food habits are shaped according to the class, culture, identity and society.

2) The class and identity of people in our society are judged by two things 'what they buy' and 'how they eat'.

3) Food is seen more than just a scientific element relating to calories and nutrition. It is used to classify people within themselves.

4) The food consumed by 'The Poor' is seen as unhealthy and less rich in nutrition. Whereas, the food of the elite and rich people is considered as a healthy and standard one.

5) Pierre Bourdieu theory of taste - our food taste and choices are influenced by social class not our personal choices.

6) The food pattern of the working class is associated with heavy foods and immediate satisfaction. Examples: Meat, bread and chips.
For the Bourgeoisie society, the food is linked with captivating aesthetic effects, moderation and restraints.

8) It is the dominant class that determines what must be considered as: Legitimate and Healthy food, Good taste etc.

9) Even though globalization and industrial production has increased significantly in this modern world, the inequality and class differences still exist in our system.

10) In this contemporary period, the food culture is characterized by the novelty in the variety of foods, experimentation and also food is seen as a lifestyle itself.

11) Food has evolved into a habit of leisure. People relax themself by engaging in cooking, eating outside etc.

12) The middle class people have started consuming exotic and unique foods to make them appear differently among the crowd.

13) The same middle class has the flexibility to consume both the elite and the common foods.

14) There is an existence of food differences in our consumption culture and this occurs due to unequal distribution of materials resources, income level and the accessibility.

15) Food is a bridge to connect to our cultures and it is used by migrants of various countries to carry their identity and home feel in their new place.

16) There are several food festivals depending on culture and it helps in establishing a firm group identity.

17) In these days, the definition of food has become complex and there is a blend between traditional and modern foods.

18) Therefore, food consumption must be studied beyond scientific analysis on the basis of social meanings, class, identity and cultural representations.
